Imagine a world where millions of small businesses, often overlooked by traditional banks, gain access to the financial tools they need to thrive. That’s exactly what’s happening in Peru, thanks to a groundbreaking partnership between Mibanco and Temenos. But here’s where it gets even more exciting: this isn’t just about upgrading technology—it’s about reshaping the future of microfinance in a country where 99% of businesses are micro or small, and 7 million people and businesses remain unbanked.
In a bold move announced on February 11, 2026, from Grand-Lancy, Switzerland, Temenos (SIX: TEMN), a global powerhouse in banking technology, revealed that Banco de la Microempresa S.A. (Mibanco), Peru’s leading microfinance bank, has chosen Temenos SaaS to revolutionize its core banking infrastructure. This partnership aims to expand financial access for small businesses across Peru, addressing a critical gap in the country’s economy.
As part of its digital transformation journey, Mibanco will leverage Temenos Core and Temenos Data Hub as SaaS solutions. This strategic shift will not only accelerate time-to-market for new products but also enhance customer experiences and streamline operations. For instance, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will benefit from tailored financial products, more reliable digital transactions, and simplified service processes. And this is the part most people miss: by adopting a SaaS model, Mibanco can focus on what truly matters—widening financial access and innovating for underserved communities—rather than getting bogged down by technology management.
Owned by the Credicorp group, which also operates Peru’s largest bank, BCP, Mibanco serves over 1.9 million active customers and manages assets exceeding PEN 18.2 billion (USD 5.4 billion). Specializing in micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises, particularly in informal and underserved sectors, Mibanco offers a diverse range of services, including credit, savings, and insurance. These services are delivered through innovative digital channels, correspondent agents, and an extensive branch network.
The adoption of Temenos SaaS will provide Mibanco with an agile, scalable solution to drive further growth in Peru. By running on Microsoft Azure, the bank will benefit from seamless deployment and a unified view of its cloud investments, optimizing resource consumption. Here’s the controversial part: while SaaS models are praised for their efficiency, some critics argue they may limit customization. However, Temenos’s proven expertise and the flexibility of its core banking suite suggest this partnership could set a new standard for microfinance innovation.
Alberto del Solar, Deputy CEO of Mibanco, expressed enthusiasm: “With Temenos’s industry-leading technology and SaaS expertise, we’re poised to scale our responsible and profitable microfinance model. Running on Microsoft Azure, we’ll deliver agile digital products and services to small business owners, fostering sustainable economic growth in Peru.”
Rodrigo Silva, President of Temenos Americas, added: “We’re honored that Mibanco, part of Peru’s largest financial group, has chosen Temenos SaaS for its core banking modernization. This partnership highlights the strength of our core banking suite, our regionalized functionality, and our deep understanding of the local market. We’re excited to support Mibanco in advancing financial inclusion across Latin America.”
But here’s the question that lingers: Can this partnership truly bridge the financial gap for millions of underserved businesses in Peru? And what does this mean for the future of microfinance globally? Share your thoughts in the comments—we’d love to hear your perspective!
